After Freedom: What’s Next?

From Liberty For All

For those who have made the mistake of reading my rants or, even worse, of actually listening to me, you may already know that I’m an optimist in a pessimistic sort of way.  That sounds funny, but it can be summed up fairly succinctly.

I do not believe the cause of Liberty will succeed politically.  But I do believe it will succeed-because I believe things will get so bad, fairly soon, that the Feral Government (and most of its state clones) will fall under its own weight, and due largely to financial insolvency.  Of course, I also believe that it will try to drag as many of us with it as possible, and there will be some pretty nasty incidents during and after the fall.  But in the end, I believe we will be basically free-for as long as we can hold it.

Thus, I’m pessimistically optimistic-because I believe things will get worse (inevitably) but that it will lead to something good-for a little while.

A daily thought checklist of mine (I have a few) is as follows:

· What can I do to live more free now?
· What can I do that would lead to more freedom for myself in the near future?
· What can I or should I be doing to further the cause of freedom?
· What would I do if the government did… (any of a number of scenarios)?
· What would I do if I was completely free, but no one else was?
· What would I do if (by magic) we were all completely free right now?
· What do I need to do to prepare for freedom?
· How do I keep my freedom once I have it?

That last question seems to be the most important.  If we do achieve our freedom, how do we keep it?  The Feral Government won’t be dead for five minutes before some statist jerk comes along and starts promising all the remaining parasites that they can live well off the sweat of the producers-and they’ll love the idea.  They won’t have learned anything from the recent past-except perhaps that if they want to enslave everyone again, they’d better put us pesky freedom activists down pretty hard and fast.

Of course, if we’ve just finished fighting for our freedom, we’ll all be pretty determined not to give it up.  So let’s say that we manage to keep any of the leftover statist jerks from rebuilding the government right away.  But what of our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren?  No matter how hard we try to raise them with an appreciation of freedom, chances are that they won’t have really internalized the importance of freedom and the horror of government.  So in a generation, or two, or maybe three at most, someone comes along and sells them on “just a little government.”  And we all know what happens as soon as you let the foot in the door…

So, in case you didn’t already have enough to do, what with trying to actually gain your freedom and such, I think we need to do something to prepare for preventing the return of government after it falls.  We need an “Anti-Government League” devoted to preventing the re-enslavement of the people.

But wait-there’s more.  We don’t just need the Anti-Government League, we also need “The Society of Eternal Hostility to Tyranny” and “The Secret Order of Anti-Fabians” and any other anti-government organizations, clubs, secret societies, whatever.  One group won’t be enough, and without appropriate checks and balances, such a group could be perverted and become the nucleus of a new government itself.

How will these groups operate to ensure the stain of government slavery never again darkens the souls of humans?  Well, there should be as many methods as there are groups.  Education would of course be at the top of the list.  But as a last resort, these organizations should be willing to oppose the gathering forces of tyranny with force, if necessary.  Freedom is too important to allow it to be taken away again-and unless we do a better job at protecting it than our forefathers, in less than 100 years our descendants will be in the same fix we are now.
